Southern Art & Makers Collective Available
Southern Art & Makers Collective coordinates custom art commissions, original illustration work, and handmade goods from over sixty regional artisans in Montgomery, Alabama.
About
Clients sourcing visual artwork in Montgomery often face a common hurdle: finding skilled illustrators and fine artists capable of delivering authentic, regionally grounded custom work without wading through mass-market alternatives or detached online platforms. Southern Art & Makers Collective operates directly out of its permanent studio and retail space at 1228 Madison Avenue, serving as an active bridge between private collectors, interior designers, gift seekers, and more than sixty Southern creators. The collective handles diverse briefs, ranging from original paper illustrations and narrative drawings to custom-painted keepsakes and bespoke pottery, eliminating the guesswork from independent commissioning.
The collective originated in 2013 when founders Heather Parrish and Joe Birdwell launched seasonal downtown pop-up galleries under various banners—including the Tallapoosa Street Goods Artist Shop and Pop-Up Montgomery—to revitalize empty commercial storefronts each December. By January 2018, the demand for sustained, year-round access prompted a permanent establishment on Madison Avenue. Today, alongside co-organizers Aleah Goode and Melody White, the shop functions as a practical hub where patrons bring concrete ideas—such as architectural line drawings, custom botanical prints, or branded illustrative elements—directly to experienced working artists.
Project coordination begins with direct intake during regular gallery hours or scheduled private reviews. When patrons need specialized commissions, collective staff evaluate the medium, visual tone, and project requirements, pairing the client with the illustrator or maker best suited to handle paper, fiber, wood, or ceramic media. The intake process reviews spatial constraints, framing expectations, substrate materials, and reference imagery before drafting timelines or taking deposits, ensuring both the creator and client establish clear expectations regarding scale and technique before production starts.
Because original art commissions and hand-drawn works depend heavily on studio schedules, clients operating under strict personal or corporate gift deadlines should initiate custom inquiries at least three to four weeks prior to their delivery date. The physical showroom operates Wednesday through Friday from 12:00 to 5:00 and Saturday from 12:00 to 3:00, allowing patrons to inspect finished specimens, review artisan portfolios in person, and coordinate bespoke projects well in advance of regional holidays.
