About
Mychelle’s Atelier approaches tailoring through a technical lens centered on complex bridal and evening wear construction. Established in 2015 by Johnny and My Pham, the Manassas operation grew from a home-based studio into a dedicated commercial facility on Bulloch Drive. Rather than treating garment fitting as simple pinning and trimming, the technical team evaluates the underlying engineering of each piece, examining interior boning channels, horsehair hem braids, and tension distribution across multi-layered textiles like organza, satin, and French lace.
Diagnostic evaluations begin with balance and drape analysis across the wearer’s natural posture. Gowns with heavy beadwork or hand-appliqued embroidery require deconstruction before any alteration takes place. Seamstresses unpick decorative surface elements by hand, store beads for matching, adjust side seams or darts on the underlying foundational structure, and individually resew the embellishments across the new seam lines to conceal stitch points. For skirts composed of varying densities of tulle and chiffon, leveling requires multi-point floor measurements from the true waistline rather than standard perimeter cuts, preventing scalloped or trailing edges across uneven floor contact.
Complex work frequently involves bodice reshaping and custom bustle engineering. The shop installs reinforced interior waist stays to relieve stress from delicate necklines and unlined illusion panels, transferring garment weight directly to the natural waist. Seamstresses craft customized bustle systems—ranging from French under-bustles with color-coded ribbon ties to multi-point over-bustles using reinforced clear hooks—matched directly to the train's fabric weight. Industrial pressing tables, gravity-feed steam equipment, and calibrated needle gauges ensure fragile silks remain free of water spots or thread puckers during assembly.
Studio operations follow a structured schedule, designating Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays exclusively for in-person client fittings, while alternate weekdays are reserved for bench work and machine assembly. Initial bridal consultations typically require an eight-to-twelve-week lead time before the event date to allow for multi-stage fittings. Clients arriving for their primary assessment must bring the exact undergarments, shapewear, and footwear planned for the event, as shifts in heel height or foundation support fundamentally alter skirt break lines and bodice tension points.
