About
Ericka Engelman Couture operates as a private custom design and garment construction studio in Salinas, built on more than thirty-five years of pattern drafting and couture dressmaking experience. Founded by Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising graduate Ericka Engelman after relocating to the Monterey Peninsula, the studio originated on a Carmel porch before developing into an independent operation focused on custom bridal gowns, formal evening wear, and specialized garment alterations. Rather than relying on standard off-the-rack sizing metrics, the studio emphasizes original proportional engineering, drafting individual patterns that directly correspond to a client's natural posture and skeletal frame.
The studio follows a structured four-stage development method for custom apparel and complex bridal reconstructions. Projects commence with a foundational consultation where clients share design references, study textile swatches, and review hand-drawn technical sketches. Once baseline body measurements are recorded over fitted daywear, Engelman constructs a three-dimensional prototype using raw cotton muslin. This intermediate mock-up allows seam lines, waist placements, and necklines to be altered directly against the body before any final textiles are cut. Once the cotton mock-up is adjusted, it is deconstructed into a working flat pattern, transferring calibrated adjustments onto silks, laces, brocades, or specialty wools.
Garment assembly advances through dedicated fabric fittings where structural elements such as interior boning, horsehair braid hems, hand-set zippers, and lining layers are integrated. When executing bridal alterations or redesigning vintage family gowns, Engelman applies the same couture techniques, disassembling internal stays and delicate lace appliqués to re-sculpt garments without compromising external proportions. Complex silhouettes often involve intermediate checks to account for textile drape or shifts in posture, ensuring every seam lies flat against the body without pulling or puckering under movement.
Commissioning custom garments or extensive bridal fittings requires advance planning, particularly given spring and summer wedding schedules across the central coast. Consultations are scheduled by prior appointment at the Wildwood Way studio. Clients attending the initial fabric fitting must bring the exact undergarments, shapewear, and event footwear intended for the finished dress, as heel heights and foundation structure dictate hem markers and waist balance. Custom bridal projects require a fifty percent non-refundable deposit upon finalization of the sketch and initial measurements, with the remaining balance due upon completion at the final fitting.
