About
Josh's Tailoring & Design operates from the second floor of 200 O'Farrell Street in San Francisco, maintaining a workshop staffed by five master tailors under the direction of founder Josh Djafari. Raised in Tabriz within a family of textile artisans and formally trained in Germany before establishing his practice in Northern California, Djafari brings over four decades of garment construction knowledge to Union Square. The workshop provides structural garment alterations, fine fabric restoration, and complete bespoke tailoring for both menswear and womenswear, handling materials ranging from bridal silks to heavy cashmere overcoats.
Garment alterations follow strict structural checkpoints rather than surface-level fixes. When re-tailoring suits and tuxedos, the tailors dismantle and rebuild shoulder lines, re-pitch sleeves, adjust chest canvases, and taper trousers to rebalance the overall drape against individual posture. The shop is also one of the few local workrooms practicing precise textile reweaving, a specialized repair method where loose or matching yarn is woven thread by thread directly into damaged wool or suit weaves to eliminate tears and moth holes. Linings are fully replaced, waistbands reset, and buttonholes reinforced with heavy-gauge thread to preserve the integrity of high-grade fabrics sourced from English and Italian mills.
The bridal division functions as a specialized operation within the studio, managed alongside partner Jennifer Supit. Alterations on wedding gowns encompass restructuring built-in corsetry, hand-hemming layered skirts, and engineering custom bustles matched to specific gown trains. Alongside their custom Nasrin Collection and made-to-measure bridal offerings, the tailoring team manages major size adjustments for gowns purchased off the rack, adjusting complex side seams with delicate beadwork and resetting illusion necklines without distorting the original silhouette.
Standard tailoring turnaround averages a few days to one full week, extending to two or three weeks during peak wedding and gala seasons. The studio accepts walk-in clients for minor alterations during the week, though appointments are strongly advised for Friday and Saturday visits, wedding gowns, and multi-garment wardrobe overhauls. Clients arriving for gown or suit fittings must bring the specific shoes, undergarments, or foundational shapewear planned for the event, as posture and hem geometry depend directly on heel height and undergarment structure.
