About
European Design approaches garment alteration through classic Continental patternmaking principles, grounded in founder Katerina’s formal training at the Krisi Sewing and Design College in Europe. Operating on East 14th Street in San Leandro since 1988, the workshop evaluates clothing through a structural lens rather than relying on surface-level tucks. When assessing a jacket, gown, or pair of trousers, the diagnostic process begins by checking balance lines, sleeve pitch, and how the garment hangs against the natural posture of the wearer. Misalignments are corrected by opening seams and resetting panels along the original grainline to prevent pulling or uneven drape.
Handling intricate garments—such as wedding dresses, prom gowns, and multi-layered bridesmaid dresses—demands specialized methods for stabilization and edge finishing. The shop works extensively with interior corsetry, boning channels, horsehair braid hems, and hand-tacked lace appliques. For structured menswear, adjustments to suit jacket shoulders or chest canvases require completely disassembling armscyes and collar stands, recutting excess material, and hand-basting layers back together before machine topstitching. This mechanical precision prevents collar rolls and maintains the engineered roll of the lapel.
Routine alterations receive the same technical focus. Trouser tapering involves proportional re-grading from the knee down rather than simply narrowing the outseam, which keeps the vertical crease centered over the shoe. Zipper replacements are executed by removing damaged hardware cleanly from seam allowances and inserting color-matched concealed or heavy-duty brass zippers with reinforced stop stitching. When addressing vintage or damaged clothing, seam stress is evaluated before sewing to determine whether fabric reinforcements or bias binding are needed to support aged fibers.
Fitting consultations take place directly in the shop, where adjustments are marked with tailored chalk and pins to establish precise finished lines. Standard turnaround for basic alterations typically ranges from a few days to a full week, while multi-layer formalwear and bridal adjustments require several weeks and staged fit checks. For all hem adjustments and bodice fittings, clients must bring the exact footwear and foundation garments planned for wear, as heel height and undergarment profile directly dictate drape, floor clearance, and final proportion.
