About
The Camp Couture handles demanding garment challenges at its Palm Avenue workspace in San Mateo, where clients regularly arrive with pieces that standard dry-cleaner counters cannot resolve. Founded and directed by designer Alexandria von Bromssen, an MFA graduate and runner-up on Project Runway Season 12, the studio operates with deep technical foundations in advanced patternmaking, upcycling, and garment construction. Projects range from complex wedding gown modifications and suit restructuring to difficult vintage restorations and uniform adjustments. Rather than treating tailoring as quick seam work, the studio approaches every garment as a structural design challenge where balance, fabric grain, and weight distribution must remain intact.
Many clients arrive with high-stakes fitting dilemmas: an ill-fitting jacket where the armscye pulls across the back, or an imported evening dress that gapes along a boned neckline. The intake diagnostic starts with an unvarnished assessment of the garment's internal construction. The studio examines how the original piece was stabilized, checking seam allowances, existing interfacing, lining ease, and internal stay tapes. For delicate garments featuring multi-layered skirts, boning, or hand-beaded lace, modifications frequently require disassembling panels from the inside out to avoid puckering or throwing off the garment’s balance point.
Restyling and upcycling vintage garments form another significant part of the studio's technical bench work. Clients frequently bring heirloom coats or vintage silk gowns inherited from family members that need comprehensive structural updates to fit modern proportions. In these cases, the team evaluates the tensile strength of the older fabric, replaces brittle internal linings, and repositions darts or waist seams to update the silhouette without damaging the original textiles. The same technical discipline applies to menswear, where tapering trousers or resetting jacket shoulders involves checking how the fabric drapes while the client sits, stands, and walks.
For time-sensitive commissions, particularly wedding parties and milestone event wear, turnaround schedules depend heavily on garment complexity and seasonal volume. Rush requests can occasionally be accommodated depending on studio capacity, but major formal alterations generally require three to five weeks and multiple fitting checkpoints. To ensure accurate pinning and prevent unnecessary re-hemming passes, clients should arrive at their initial fitting with the exact footwear and undergarments intended for the final garment, and schedule appointments at least four to six weeks prior to their event date.
